RESUMEN

Bizarre parosteal osteochondromatous proliferations (BPOPs) are distinct clinical-pathological entities that demonstrate combinations of atypical-appearing osseous and chondromatous tissues. These lesions are usually reactive in nature. Histopathologically, 'bizarre' cartilage is a characteristic feature of this lesion. BPOPs usually represent slow-growing painless bony hard protuberances that arise from the surface of affected bone cortices, typically the metacarpals, metatarsals, and phalanges. The occurrence of these lesions in the skull and jaws is sporadic. This case report highlights the clinical presentation, histopathological characteristics, and management of BPOP arising from the supraorbital rim in a 61-year-old female patient.

RESUMEN

Distraction osteogenesis is a popular treatment modality to lengthen the mandible. It is commonly performed in wide varieties of craniofacial syndromes, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) ankylosis, and obstructive sleep apnea cases requiring a significant amount of mandibular lengthening. There are many complications associated with mandibular distraction osteogenesis procedure and the breakage of the distractor is very rare. There are few reports in the literature mentioning the breakage of a distractor. This article highlights an up-to-date knowledge of the etiology and prevention of mandibular distractor breakage and a case report which was managed well after bilateral internal mandibular distractor breakage. This is the first case report describing the spontaneous bilateral mandibular distractor breakage during the active phase of distraction osteogenesis.

RESUMEN

Multiferroic Y-doped BiFeO3 (BY10FO) thin films were deposited on FTO coated glass substrate using sol-gel spin coating technique. Y-doping causes structural distortion without changing the structure of the parent BiFeO3 (rhombohedral: R3c). The M-H hysteresis curve reveals that the BY10FO film exhibits saturation magnetization at a low-coercive field by suppressing the spiral spin modulated structure. The bipolar resistive switching behavior has been investigated on a Ag/BY10FO/FTO hetero-structure through conventional I-V curve measurements and the device can produce an ON/OFF ratio of around 12 over 30 complete testing cycles. The space charge limited current and Schottky barrier emission conduction mechanism play a crucial role in switching the states between HRS and LRS. The impedance spectroscopy analysis at HRS and LRS confirms the significant degradation of resistance from MΩ to kΩ. The switching mechanism in the hetero-structure is due to migration and recombination of oxygen vacancies present in the film. The non-degradation of the Ag/BY10FO/FTO device after several testing cycles confirms that the switching of resistance between ON and OFF states is reproducible, reversible and controllable to be used for possible future non-volatile resistive random access memory application.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To find out the nature of feeding practices among children with cleft lip and palate. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 155 subjects of less than 2 years of age with cleft lip and palate were chosen and divided into three groups according to their chronological age. Group I included 47 subjects (M=35, F=12) who were <6 months old, Group II included 56 subjects (M=36, F=20) aged between 6 months and 1 year, and Group III included 52 subjects (M=28, F=24) of age between 1 and 2 years. Both the parents of the subjects with cleft lip and palate were interviewed and the details of the existing feeding practice were recorded on a standard pro forma. Chi-square test was applied to find out any significant difference in the feeding method between males and females. RESULTS: Spoon feeding was found as the most common feeding practice method. Breast feeding was the second most common feeding practice method among Group I subjects, whereas bottle feeding was the second most common feeding practice method among Group II and III subjects. The difference in the feeding practice between male and female subjects in all the three groups was very negligible and statistically not significant. CONCLUSION: Spoon feeding was found as the most common feeding method practiced by the parents of children with cleft lip and palate.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the distribution of individual tooth impaction in general dental patients of Northern India. SETTING: Centre for Dental Education and Research, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi. DESIGN: Hospital based crossectional study. METHODS: General dental patients were examined clinically and impacted teeth were diagnosed from radiographs. The distribution of impacted teeth (excluding third molars) with respect to the arch, side and gender were recorded. The results were analyzed with respect to the prevalence of individual tooth impaction. The distribution of teeth impaction was evaluated by using the Chi-square test. A p-value of < 0.05 was considered as statistically significant. RESULTS: Of 27,529 general dental patients examined, 134 (0.49%) had at least one-impacted tooth and a total of 220 impacted teeth were recorded. The most frequently impacted teeth were maxillary canines (52.27%) and the least frequently impacted teeth were maxillary first and second molars (0%). CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of teeth impaction in the North Indian dental patients was less when compared with the other populations. The most frequently impacted teeth were maxillary canines and the least frequently impacted teeth were maxillary first and second molars.

RESUMEN

Etiology of class-III malocclusion is generally believed to be genetic. A wide range of environmental factors have been suggested as contributing factors for the development of class-III malocclusion. Twin study is one of the most effective methods available for investigating genetically determined variables of malocclusion. Discordancy for class-III malocclusion is a frequent finding in dizygotic twins. However, class-III malocclusion discordancy in monozygotic twins is a rare finding. The purpose of this study of monozygotic twins is to assess the genetic and environmental components of variation within the cranio-dento-facial complex.
